Briarcrest

The Occupied Village Β· Session Hub

πŸŒ™ First Impression: You approach Briarcrest as the week-long sunset begins. Golden light filters through a massive wall of living thornsβ€”12 feet high, writhing slowly, covered in silver-veined leaves. Beyond it, bioluminescent flowers line dirt streets, casting soft blue and purple glows. Ironhold soldiers in grey armor patrol the western quarter. Verdanya locals in earth-toned clothes keep to the eastern side. The air smells of bread, wood smoke, and something sweet and rotting. A Wickling priest tends a small shrine made of woven thorns. The thorn wall whispers in the wind.

🏘️ Key Locations

βš”οΈ Ironhold Garrison (West Quarter)

Description

Two-story stone building. Ironhold banner (grey wolf on blue field) hangs from second floor. 20-30 soldiers quartered here. Armory in basement. Sergeant Greymark's office on second floor overlooks central square.

NPCs

  • Sergeant Daven Greymark: Commander, conflicted, dying of Ashlung
  • Soldiers: Tired, scared, most don't want to be here

Interactions

  • Checkpoint at edge of quarter (papers checked)
  • Greymark may request meeting if party proves competent
  • Soldiers gossip about recent Verdant Wolf attacks
🍞 Nessa's Bakery (East Quarter)

Description

Cozy stone building, smells of honey and fresh bread. Front: Shop with counter, shelves of pastries. Back: Kitchen with large oven. Basement: SECRET - Tunnel to rebel supply cache.

🍯 Vibe: Warm, inviting, grandmotherly. Nessa smiles and offers free samples. But watch her eyesβ€”they're always evaluating.

NPC: Nessa Bramwell

Appears: Friendly baker, Varen's informant

Reality: Thornwraith's spy, testing party for recruitment

Secret Basement

  • Hidden door behind flour sacks (Agility 15 or Insight 16 to notice)
  • Ladder down to tunnel
  • Cache: Rope, rations, bandages, rebel messages, thorn-and-rose badges
  • If discovered: Nessa flees to Highroot
🌳 Elder Rowan's Grove (East Quarter)

Description

Circle of five ancient trees at village edge. Moss-covered stones form sitting area. Small altar to Sylora (goddess of seasons). Elder Rowan lives in hollow of largest tree.

πŸ„ Vibe: Peaceful but heavy. You feel the weight of centuries. The trees hum faintly. Rowan sits among mushroom growths, eyes closed, maintaining the thorn wall.

NPC: Elder Rowan Knotwise

Ancient Fungril Druid, village leader. Performs daily ritual to maintain living wall (exhausting). Wall failingβ€”2 weeks until collapse.

Quest Hook

Needs Moonbloom petals to strengthen barrier. Petals grow in Verdant Curse territory, guarded by Verdant Stag.

🎲 Briartongue's Shrine (Central Square)

Description

Small shrine made of woven thorns. Offerings: Blood-stained cloth, copper coins, dried flowers. Wickling priest (Herald) tends it.

🩸 Vibe: Eerie. The thorns are ALIVEβ€”they move slowly, reach toward offerings. The Herald whispers prayers that sound like rustling leaves.

NPC: Herald of Briartongue

Small Wickling, speaks in cryptic warnings. Offers blessings (see Encounters page for mechanics).

Ominous Quote

"The thorns grow where blood was spilled. They remember. They hunger. When the seasons turn, they will grow again."

⚠️ Threats to Briarcrest

Immediate Dangers

Long-Term Crisis

Briarcrest is a microcosm of the entire war. Ironhold occupation "protects" but oppresses. Verdanya locals resent but need the soldiers to fight Verdant-Born. The wall (Elder's magic + Verdanya's connection to land) is the only thing keeping everyone alive. If it falls, village dies. If occupation ends, village also dies (no soldiers to fight threats). There is no easy answer.
