Briarcrest
The Occupied Village Β· Session Hub
π First Impression: You approach Briarcrest as the week-long sunset begins. Golden light filters through a massive wall of living thornsβ12 feet high, writhing slowly, covered in silver-veined leaves. Beyond it, bioluminescent flowers line dirt streets, casting soft blue and purple glows. Ironhold soldiers in grey armor patrol the western quarter. Verdanya locals in earth-toned clothes keep to the eastern side. The air smells of bread, wood smoke, and something sweet and rotting. A Wickling priest tends a small shrine made of woven thorns. The thorn wall whispers in the wind.

β οΈ Threats to Briarcrest
Immediate Dangers
- Verdant Wolves: Attack weekly (coordinated, intelligent)
- Wall Collapse: 2 weeks until barrier fails completely
- Soldier vs. Local Tension: Could erupt into violence
- Nessa's Spy Network: Rebels know everything that happens here
Long-Term Crisis
Briarcrest is a microcosm of the entire war. Ironhold occupation "protects" but oppresses. Verdanya locals resent but need the soldiers to fight Verdant-Born. The wall (Elder's magic + Verdanya's connection to land) is the only thing keeping everyone alive. If it falls, village dies. If occupation ends, village also dies (no soldiers to fight threats). There is no easy answer.
π‘ GM Tips for Running Briarcrest
Make It Feel Lived-In
- Describe smells: Bread, smoke, moss, flowers
- Background NPCs: Children playing, merchants arguing, soldiers drilling
- Sounds: Thorn wall rustling, well bucket creaking, baker's oven crackling
- Lighting: Bioluminescent flowers (blue/purple), torches (orange), week-long sunset (gold/crimson)
Show the Moral Complexity
- Ironhold soldier helps local child retrieve cat from tree
- Verdanya elder spits at soldier's feet, but soldier doesn't react (used to it)
- Greymark arguing with commander: "We're not monsters. We don't raid civilians."
- Nessa gives free bread to both sides (but secretly reports to rebels)
