⚔️ Combat Encounters

🐺 Verdant Wolves Attack Briarcrest
Combat Tier 1

Setup

4-6 Verdant Wolves attack the village at night. Coordinated, intelligent. Goal: test the failing thorn wall.

Mechanics

  • Verdant Wolves: Standard stats + moss armor (DR 2) + thorn attacks (Wither Token on crit)
  • Wall Breach: If wolves damage wall (16 HP section), civilians in danger
  • Elder Rowan: Can seal breach with ritual (takes 2 rounds, vulnerable)

Story Hooks

  • Introduces Verdant Corruption mechanics
  • Shows Elder Rowan's exhaustion
  • Party gains trust with villagers
  • Sergeant Greymark impressed by competence
🌲 Ambush on the Road to Highroot
Combat Tier 1

Setup

Rebel scouts (3-4 rangers) ambush party to test if they're Ironhold spies. Briar may be present.

Options

  • Talk It Out: Presence or Instinct check (15) to de-escalate
  • Fight: Rebels retreat if 2+ drop, report to Briar
  • Surrender: Taken to Highroot for questioning
🦌 Verdant Stag Guardian
Combat Discovery Tier 1

Setup

Massive stag with antlers made of living wood. Guarding Moonbloom flowers (for Elder Rowan's quest).

Options

  • Combat: Difficult fight, Stag has high HP + regeneration in Verdant territory
  • Peaceful: Offering (food, Hope die, promise to protect forest) → Stag allows harvest
  • Stealth: Agility check (17) to sneak past and harvest

Twist

If befriended, Stag can guide party partway to Highroot (bypasses 1 day of dangerous travel).

💬 Social Encounters

🍞 Nessa's Test
Tier 1

Setup

Nessa invites party to "help deliver bread" to eastern quarter. Actually testing if they'll report villagers sheltering refugee.

Choices

  • Report to Greymark: Nessa becomes hostile, warns rebels
  • Keep Secret: Nessa trusts them slightly, may offer intel
  • Investigate: Insight check (15) reveals Nessa is lying about something
⚔️ Greymark's Daughter
Tier 1

Setup

Sergeant Greymark pulls party aside. Shows them letter from Ironhold: daughter (age 12) has Ashlung, needs Mourning Roses. Begs for help.

Moral Choice

  • Harvest 3 Roses: Save his daughter, but those doses can't cure 3 other citizens
  • Refuse: Greymark becomes hostile, may sabotage party later
  • Promise Later: Greymark grants temporary trust, expects delivery

Consequence

If party helps, Greymark "doesn't see" them leaving Briarcrest toward Highroot. May provide supplies or distraction.

🌿 Meeting the Thornwraith
Tier 1

Setup

After proving themselves to Briar, party brought to hidden platform at Highroot's summit. Face-to-face with Elara Thornheart.

The Offer

Elara reveals her plan: steal Spring Eye to end Verdant Curse. Asks party to choose:

  • Join her: Path 1 (help steal Eye, endless winter)
  • Stop her: Path 2 (capture/kill, return to Varen)
  • Leave: Neutral, but rebels won't let them warn Ironhold
  • Find Better Way: Path 3 (player-initiated, recover both Eyes)

Revelation

Elara shows them Verdant-Born refugees (children with moss skin, families with bark limbs). "This is what your employer defends."

🔍 Discovery Encounters

📜 Kael's Testimony
Discovery Tier 1

Setup

Party finds Kael Ashborn in temple ruins. Partially Verdant-Born (moss on skin, bark arm). Terrified but willing to talk.

Intel Revealed

  • Saw rebels wearing thorn-and-rose badges
  • Overheard "returning the eye" conversation
  • Knows Highroot location (north, treetop village)
  • Rebels saved him after desertion

Moral Weight

Kael begs party not to betray rebels who saved him. If forced (Presence 17+), he gives location but warns them first.

🌙 Briartongue's Shrine
Discovery Tier 1

Setup

Small shrine to Briartongue (thorn deity) in Briarcrest. Herald (Wickling priest) offers cryptic warnings and blessings.

Blessing Options

  • Thorn's Protection: +2 Armor Slots for 24 hours (one character)
  • Blood Price: Take 1d6 damage → add +2 to next attack roll
  • Omen Reading: Insight into next major choice (GM hints at consequence)

Cryptic Warning

"The thorns remember where blood was spilled. They will grow again when the seasons turn."

🏛️ Sylora's Roost (Path 1 Climax)
Discovery Combat Tier 1

Setup

If party joins Thornwraith, they assault Sylora's shrine to steal Spring Eye. Guarded by Verdant-Born + Faint Divinity manifestation.

Guardians

  • Verdant Stag Guardian (stronger version)
  • Thorn Elementals (3-4)
  • Sylora's Avatar: Speaks in riddles, tries to reason with party

Moral Weight

Sylora's Avatar warns: "Without both Eyes, seasons die. Winter will devour all." Party must choose to continue or abort.

🎲 Random Encounter Table (Journey to Highroot)

Roll 1d8 per day of travel:

  1. Verdant Wolves (2-4): Hunt in pack, coordinated
  2. Ironhold Patrol (4-6 soldiers): Demand identification, may attack if party seems hostile
  3. Rebel Scout (solo): Observes from distance, reports to Highroot
  4. Verdant-Born Refugee: Lost, begging for help, partially transformed
  5. Faint Divinity (Mellifer's Bees): Swarm of glowing bees, demand offering of honey or flowers
  6. Mourning Rose Patch: 1d4 flowers (cure ingredient), guarded by thorns (Agility 14 or 1d4 damage)
  7. Moonbloom Grove: Bioluminescent flowers (for Elder Rowan quest), Verdant Stag nearby
  8. Safe Camp Site: Peaceful rest, no encounter
